On February
11th, 2012, Mastodon took the stage at London's O2 Academy in Brixton, capping
off the Atlanta-based band's world tour in support of their critically acclaimed
album The Hunter. This sold-out performance was Mastodon's first show at the
legendary Brixton venue. It won't be their last, as the London audience
positively erupted from the opening chords until the final, frenzied encore.
This special 180-gram vinyl pressing is the only physical version of this
special show and includes a DVD of the entire
performance.
If you’ve been to a Mastodon concert, there are usually cool visuals, but the band doesn’t engage in much (if any) stage banter. They get down to business and let their instruments do the talking. That’s the case with Live In Brixton ( ).
The show was recorded in early 2012
at London's O2 Academy in Brixton during The Hunter world tour. The 97 minute
concert showcases songs from throughout Mastodon’s career, with a whopping 23
tracks played during the show.
They go all the way back to their 2002 debut
Remission for “Where Strides The Behemoth,” and play songs from Leviathan, Blood
Mountain and Crack The Skye as well. The bulk of the material is from their
latest album The Hunter. Mastodon play 9 of its 13 songs, including the single
“Curl The Burl.”
The show wraps up with “Creature Lives,” also fromThe
Hunter. During the song, opening bands Red Fang and the Dillinger Escape Plan
come out on stage for a rousing singalong as red balloons are dropped into the
audience.
After keeping verbal interaction to a minimum during the show,
afterwards the band stays out on stage for a few minutes thanking the fans and
taking a group picture with the sellout crowd as the backdrop.
Mastodon’s
musicianship during Live At Brixton is excellent. Years of relentless touring
have made them a well-oiled machine. They are a force to be reckoned with. The
vocals, on the other hand, are sometimes inconsistent and off key. Overall,
though, it’s a good show that’s both entertaining and a good cross-section of
their catalog. (Chad Bowar/heavymetal.about.com)
