The Beatles: Hey Jude (The Beatles Again)
Apple Records SW-385, 1970
Legendary late-era singles comp, with that iconic cover portrait ... and filled wall-to-wall with late-era Beatles favorites and their respective B-sides. Sure there are a couple leftovers from the band’s mid-’60s pop era ('Can't Buy Me Love' and its B-side, 'I Should Have Known Better'), but the remainder of the album is the collected singles from their late-’60s rock period. Iconic singles like ‘Hey Jude,’ ‘Revolution,’ ‘Dont Let Me Down’ ... plus ‘Paperback Writer’ and its underrated B-side, John Lennon's 'Rain.'
(See? This thing is chock full of goodies!)
And side note: Was this the last time they posed side-by-side for an album cover? Probably, and they don’t look too happy about it.
Silly wankers and their financial squabbles… (To quote George, circa 1970, "Isn't it a pity. Yeah, isn't it a shame.")
As for this particular record, the one for sale in this auction....
This isn’t a true first pressing, but it is from the first year of release, 1970, and retains the same very-glaring misprint that the original had. On the earlier version, the rear cover and spine read Apple SW-385, while the inner labels read SO-385. That mistake is corrected for this version, but the album titles are still wrong: The spine reads "The Beatles – Hey Jude" while the inner labels read "The Beatles Again – The Beatles." Who knows what the album is actually called? (Most people call it Hey Jude, but it doesn't really matter to this guy.)
Another very important clue about its 1st year / 1970 origins is the fact that EMI and Capitol Records are not mentioned ANYWHERE. Later editions of this album were co-opted by the major labels, but earliest 1970 editions were manufactured and distributed by Apple. And still another clue, in the runout dead wax of the vinyl, SO-385 is etched, but the O has a W etched on top of it. Like someone said "Ooops!" and tried to correct their mistake.
So there you go. It's from 1970.
