Item : 12” Album - gatefold cover
Artist : Rats
Title : Rats First
Year : 1974
Issue : 1st Australian pressing – Goodear Records (Festival) label # L 35265
Songs :
A terrific pressing of this 1974 Aussie gate-fold issued LP from Rats (so named as it is STAR spelt backwards!) ... a London rock-band that features singer-writer David Kubinec plus the 3 members of CWT who delivered one and only album, the ultra/ mega-rare and heavy-prog rock monster 'The Hundredweight' a year earlier ... then promptly split from the singer.
Enter David and the new somewhat unconventional quartet (assembled by producer Adrian Millar) emerged with this album which in itself is a terrific mid-70's UK glam-based rock ... not dissimilar from The Faces and probably closer to Bowies band musically but layered with Kubinec's Bolan-esque style vocals.
The lack of continuity, or even reality, in those days made it difficult to market a band and accordingly any album which resulted was only ever issued in limited quantities rather than the numbers associated with a proper release. In hindsight this was a great pity as The Rats really kick along here with a storming rock album. No fillers here either with every song a winner. From the glam-rock slamming Turtle Dove, to Thin Lizzy-ish Child He Die, to heart-wrenching ballad Glad That You're Not Me. The great guitar work throughout puts this album a few rungs above the rest of the pack for that period.
Seriously hard to find I doubt whether another copy will surface for ages and as for an Australian issue I reckon hell might freeze over first.
CONDITION – see 4 photos above : More shine On B-side than A however still l ooks and plays great. Clean both sides and a lovely sound. Only lightly played. No lead in-out noise. No pops. No skips. Barely a mark and worthy of a strong EX+ grading. Labels : Clean.

Before the LP hit the shops however 2 of the 3 CWT members (guitarist Graeme Quinton-Jones and drummer Colin White) exited over differences with Adrian Millar ; I note that Graeme Quinton-Jones turned up in UK prog outfit Gizmo a little later. Miller quickly patched things up with Roddy MacKenzie and Jeff Allen as respective replacements, even getting the photo of the new line-up on the inside gatefold cover here despite neither of the two new lads ever playing or recording a note or beat with the group.
It also seems that this new line-up of David Kubinec ; Peter Kirke ; Roddy MacKenzie and Jeff Allen did in fact lay tracks down for a 2nd album which never eventuated. These tapes re-surfaced some 30 years on and an archival CD of these recordings was released in 2009 titled ' Second Long Player Record'.
Vinyl - play-tested completely both sides :
Gate-fold Sleeve : This non-laminated cover is in very good shape. No writing. No splits. Some minor rubbing on the front and a hint of ring-wear on the back associated with age and a little edge-wear along the opening on the back. The spine is intact and a more than acceptable jacket.
To anywhere in Australia is AU$8.00. For 2 or 3 x LP’s the cost is $15.00.
For extra items costs will depend upon weight and destination however I will do my best to keep the combined total at a minimum. Australia Posts sliding rate scale often allows 10 albums to be posted for around $20.00, again dependent upon total weight and distance travelled.
NEW ZEALAND - $12 AUS
ASIA and JAPAN- $14 AUS
USA, CANADA, MIDDLE EAST - $15 AUS
EUROPE & REST OF THE WORLD - $20 AUS
Please note I no longer post to South America, Greece or to the Russian Federation.
Records will be packed outside their sleeves in a plastic bag between two strong pieces of cardboard for safe arrival.
