The late, great Del Shannon was one of the very few 'teen idols' from the early 1960's with the voice, the talent and the style. Consequently, his early 1960's recordings have endured long after the world has forgotten about Bobby Vees, Fabians and alike. This, his fourth album for a small "Amy" label includes his amazing versions of some of the best songs of the period, by Roy Orbison, Searchers, Bobby Freeman, Four Seasons and Patsy Cline. This is the voice that must be heard.  Grab this piece and Runaway.

Del Shannon's fifth LP, and his third for the Amy Records label, is an amazingly good effort that holds up very well 46 years later. Recorded at Bell Sound in New York in 1964 and 1965, and released right in the midst of the British Invasion, the music shows the influence of the British bands of the period without compromising Shannon's own sound -- his originals, mostly hook-laden, achingly beautiful, and bracing, including "Why Don't You Tell Her," "Stranger in Town," "I Go to Pieces," "Keep Searchin' (We'll Follow the Sun)," and "Over You," mix well with covers of "Do You Wanna Dance," "Needles and Pins," "Rag Doll," "I'm Gonna Be Strong," and "Running Scared." "Needles and Pins" shows Shannon adopting the Searchers' approach to the song while also adapting it to his style, while "Running Scared," in addition to being a great track in its own right, is intriguing as it slots in with the notion, floated briefly at the end of the 1980s, that Shannon was in line to be Roy Orbison's successor in the Traveling Wilburys. With Harry Balk producing in a manner akin to Phil Spector-lite, there's lots of reverb throughout the album, but at its core was a powerful guitar sound (courtesy of Shannon), Dennis Coffey, and Bill Knight, and emphatic bass -- there's not a lot of use of the musitron, apart from numbers like "Keep Searchin' ." Even "Rag Doll," one of the more dispensible tracks here in terms of originality, which emulates the arrangement and pacing of the Four Seasons' original, has a punchier rhythm section that makes the vocals sound all the more impassioned. One Thousand Six-Hundred Sixty-One Seconds With Del Shannon runs less than 30 minutes, making this a neatly bite-sized album that goes down very easily even today, with at least as much musical value as the typical British Invasion material of the same period

·                               CONDITION:

·                               RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  (WEAK) NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)             Stereo  pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono  counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies  by a ratio of at least 10:1.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging  (nothing significant).

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-         Visible shelf wear noted on the top and bottom seams.

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
