American IV: The Man Comes Around is the 87th studio album by American music artist . Released in , it is the fourth in Cash's "American" series of albums. The majority of songs are  which Cash performs in his own spare style, with help from producer . He receives backing vocal assistance from various artists, including , , and .American IV was the final album Johnny Cash released during his lifetime; though the  box set was compiled prior to his death (with Cash choosing the tracks - including an early version of "The Man Comes Around" - and writing liner notes), it was not released until two months after he died. It was also his first non-compilation album to go gold (selling over 500,000 copies) in thirty years. Additionally, the album won "Album of the Year" award at the 2003 . It was certified Gold on 4/24/2003 and Platinum on 11/21/2003 by the R.I.A.A.

The video for "", a song written by  of  in 1994, was nominated in seven categories at the 2003  and won the award for Best Cinematography. In February 2003, mere days before his 71st birthday, Cash won another  for Best Country Male Vocal Performance for "Give My Love To Rose," a song Cash had originally recorded in the late 1950s. The music video for "Hurt" also won a Grammy for Best Short Form Video at the 2004 Awards.

Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor admitted that he was initially "flattered" but worried that "the idea of Cash covering "Hurt" sounded a bit gimmicky," but when he heard the song and saw the video for the first time, Reznor said he was deeply moved and found Cash's cover beautiful and meaningful, going as far as to say "that song isn't mine anymore."

GRADING: primarily grade my records visually, based on the Goldsmith rating system of Mint, Near Mint, Very Good Plus, Very Good, Good, and Poor. Questionable marks and scratches are usually tested on a turntable and noted in the listing. I try to err on the conservative side in my grading; but since it is not an exact science, there are bound to be differing opinions as to what constitutes a certain grade. Suffice it to say that I strive to be as honest as possible in my listings, as I plan on selling records, etc. for the long haul and I am not interested in ripping anyone off. That being said, I would add that the time for questions is DURING the auction, not after. I will be happy to respond to any email as soon as possible.

RECORD GRADING:

NM (Near Mint): Like new, looks unplayed.

VG++: A few very faint surface marks, nothing that will affect play

VG+: A few more marks than a VG++. Used but not abused.

VG: Light scuffs and light scratches, there will be light surface wear to the record. Expect some light surface noise in parts or a few clicks or pops here and there.

VG-: The record may have some scratches that will be deep enough to feel. Audible clicks and pops may be consistently present, but no skips.

G: A record that has been played and not taken care of. Constant background noise will be present. Buyer should view records with this grade as filler copies.
