America was the fourth and final single (third in North America) to be released from 's eighth album , the second album to be credited to . It was released five and a half months after the album.

The single included a non-album track b-side, as well as extended versions of both and . The extended version of was not given any title to distinguish it from the album version (only credited as "America"), but was the longest extended version to be released of any track by , at 21:46 long.

The cover art, as with that of the singles and , is an enlarged detail from the artwork of the album , painted by Doug Henders.

The single reached number 46 on the US Billboard Hot 100 Chart, and number 35 on the Billboard Hot Black Singles Chart.

While America was released in most of the world, was released concurrently in the UK, where was included as the b-side.
