Product Description
Long overlooked due to its import-only status, RASTA REVOLUTION offers a potent glimpse of the Wailers prior to Marley's international stardom. Legendary Jamaican producer Lee "Scratch" Perry's presence is collaborative rather than heavy-handed, eliciting stirring performances from the original Wailers. Recorded in 1970, RASTA REVOLUTION shows that Marley's gifts were already bearing fruit: fiery topical song writing, bubbling Rasta hymns, and impassioned delivery. Marley's strength is at least in part due to the focused sonic surroundings. None of the genre's murkier ramblings that owe more to ganja than inspiration are present here. Indeed, "Mr. Brown" is as exciting as anything the Wailers or Marley himself later recorded.
Marley aficionados will undoubtedly recognize several of the tunes on RASTA REVOLUTION. As Marley was never afraid to re-record tunes, many of the disc's cuts ("Soul Rebel", "Duppy Conqueror", "Corner Stone", "400 Years", "Soul Almighty") found a second life on later American releases in slightly different versions. While it's arguable whether his later re-workings were improvements, fans leaning toward Marley's '60's ska sounds will probably feel that with RASTA REVOLUTION, he got it right the first time.
