·       AN  INTERESTING CURIO: IN THE 1960s, FOR NO RHYME OR DISCERNIBLE REASON, CAPITOL RECORDS DECIDED TO ADD ECHO,  REVERB AND RE-EQUALIZATION TO ALL ORIGINAL SINATRA STEREO MASTERS, (THANKFULLY, SINATRA'S MONO MASTERS - WHICH ARE A MAJORITY (ABOUT 60%)  IN THIS SET - RECEIVED A REPRIEVE AND WERE LEFT UNTOUCHED). THESE "DOCTORED" SINATRA CAPITOL STEREOS WERE THE ONLY VERSIONS LEFT AVAILABLE FOR THE NEXT 50 YEARS AND HAVE ONLY RECENTLY BEEN CLEANED OF THE LAYERS OF CAPITOL'S ARBITRARY SONIC GRIME. ODDLY, WHEN MOBILE FIDELITY MASTERED THE TAPES FOR THIS 16-LP VOLUME, THEY USED THE RE-EQUALIZED STEREO TAPES RATHER THAN THE ORIGINAL '50s MULTITRACK MASTERS, SO, IF YOU FIRST HEARD THE CHAIRMAN'S CAPITOL MATERIAL BETWEEN 1962 AND 1995,  THE STEREO VOLUMES INCLUDED IN THIS SET WILL SOUND EXACTLY AS YOU FIRST HEARD THEM; HOWEVER, IF YOU RECALL THE ORIGINAL SINATRA STEREO PRESSINGS FROM THE '50s, THE MOBILE FIDELITY COLLECTION STEREO VOLUMES WILL SOUND AUDIBLY LEANER, CLEANER AND  "BRIGHTER" THAN WHAT YOU REMEMBER FIRST HEARING.

Ladies and Gentlemen: you are looking at the misty mountaintop, a proverbial Mount Everest of American Vocal Artistry: nothing and no one tops Frank Sinatra in his prime, and Sinatra's prime doesn't get any prime-er than his Capitol Years (1953-1962). When none other than Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Tony Bennett or Billy Eckstine sings praises and hosanas to you and cover pretty much your entire recorded output, congratulations - you've made it to the top. And, although, technically, The Chairman didn't possess the vocal instrument of the greatest range, his phrasing, diction, timbre and heartfelt emotion are in a class and category entirely his own. You can play Sinatra's tune with 1000 other renditions, and you would immediately recognize Sinatra's.  The Man was unmistakably his own character and stylist and marched to his own drummer.

 

And, oh...lest we forget...on these immortal sessions, Frank Sinatra is backed by some of the greatest orchestras, most renowned Jazz and session musicians and some of the most legendary arrangers and conductors in the entire history of the American popular music: Nelson Riddle...Billy May...Alex Stordahl...Gordon Jenkins...In short, what you get here is the condensed, purified essence, the template for American Popular Songbook. No one could ever tackle this immortal material better than Sinatra.  These renditions are what gives name to "Jazz Standards". And if you ever wondered what "torch song" means, seek no further. This set will explain to you.

 

It should be noted that this is NOT  the complete Sinatra on Capitol: some recordings are, mysteriously, missing: as noted above, his final album for Capitol ("Point of no return") is not included, which is a glaring, cataclysmic omission the size of the Grand Canyon; Sinatra's Christmas album ("A Jolly Christmas") likewise is not included (a truly unfortunate mistake, because Sinatra's Christmas recordings - be it on Columbia, on Capitol or on Reprise, are integral part of his oeuvre);  his three movie soundtracks (Can-Can, High Society and Pal Joey) are not included, which is only a minor issue, since these typically contain only one or two Sinatra tracks, and most of those are already included in the three compilations in this set (Look to your heart; All the way and Sinatra sings of love and things). In addition, Sinatra's lone instrumental album for Capitol ("Tone Poems of Color"), where he acts merely as a conductor, but not a vocalist (totally justifiable omission) and a handful of singles present on his two critical compilations (This is Sinatra and This is Sinatra vol. 2) are not included. But you get the gist:  the bulk of essential Capitol Sinatra - probably 99% of any relevance - is here.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

 

(a)          THE VINYL IS ABSOLUTELY, PERFECTLY MINT,  as if never played before. The original luster is totally intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles like brand new. The labels look perfect, simply gorgeous, with absolutely no trace of wear around the spindle hole. The records are a TOTAL PERFECTION - ABSOLUTE VISUAL NIRVANA! We are confident that, in this condition, the set we present here is truly once-in-a-lifetime find. Because the vinyl is in such immaculate condition (not a single spindle mark to be found anywhere) , we didn't see fit to give the records additional cleaning, so the buyer can expect to see a lone speck of dust here and there. This can be easily removed with a dry, lint-free cloth.

 

(b)          THE INSIDE PACKAGING IS A MARVEL OF UNNECESSARY AND CUMBERSOME PACKAGING; BECAUSE 16 VOLUMES ARE CRAMMED INTO 10 COMPARTMENTS, MOST COMPARTMENTS HAVE MORE THAN ONE DISC; LUCKILY, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF SOME MINOR RING WEAR ON THE OUTER SLEEVES (BUT NOT ON THE INNER SLEEVES WHICH CONTAIN ORIGINAL COVER ART), THE ENTIRE SET IS FREE OF ANY MAJOR PROBLEMS.

 

(c)           The records are pressed on a beautiful, high-quality, virgin-grade vinyl, which is usually used for audiophile, extended-dynamic-range, half-speed mastered and connoisseur pressings.

 

(d)          The records are pressed on a RELATIVELY  thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type),  vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl, either.

 

(e)           The records come in their hi-grade MFSL PVC inner sleeve, which have - apparently with success - shielded the vinyl from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

 

(f)            In addition, the  records come in dual-layer cardboard inner sleeves (the inner layer replicates the original album cover art, whereas the outer layer replicates the design of the box, with a large Sinatra imprimatur on silver background.

 

(g)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

 

 

·       THE BOX:

 

THE BOX IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++.

 

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

 

-        The box has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.

 

-        The box has a 4-inch crack in the cardboard chasis on the front bottom side (not yet a split seam, but close enough)

 

-        The box has two corners slightly worn / dinged (nothing significant)

 

-        Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)

 

-        The box has a few minor pressure marks here and there  (BARELY VISIBLE)
