♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫

In his first year as a leader of a band, 1957, Yusef Lateef recorded enough material for 12 albums.  That's bigger than the typical output of most bands in their entire career.  Most of the albums are impossible to track down.  You can get a copy of 2 of them on a compilation:  The Last Savoy Sessions.

"The Dreamer" probably had more people thinking Lateef was crazy than a dreamer.  How do you play the Blues with an oboe?  Slowly.  It's an odd way to start an album, instead of charging out of the gate.  The second song, "Angel Eyes", doesn't change the pace much either.  Lateef solos on flute.  You might hear something that doesn't quite sound like a trombone.  That's the euphonium of Bernard McKinney.  It's has a more refined sound to it.  "The Dreamer" is the album's center and masterpiece.  It folds in and out of Lateef's voluptuous tenor sax and the band making like bandits in the Arabian night. "Arjuna" is the party after the looting when they admire what they pilfered.  With a saxophone sound like Lateef's, serenading women would be as easy as playing a song like "Can't Help Lovin' That Man", and that's exactly what they'd say.

A review in the British Gramophone magazine stated "a great deal of his passionate, richtoned saxophone work can be heard here".

·                               CONDITION:

·                               RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS NEAR MINT. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings)

(c)           The record has a name, or  his initials (RVG) stamped or hand-etched in the trail-off vinyl (dead wax). On SOME  Jazz labels (Blue Note, Savoy, Regent, Prestige, Impulse, Verve…) this stamp signifies highly professional masterings either done by - or  personally authorized by - the legendary engineer himself.

(d)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(e)           The album comes with its original, 'rice paper' inner sleeve (typically used in the 50’s and very early 60’s) which has - apparently with success - shielded the vinyl from the harmful impact of elements over many years! We believe that, despite great technological progress, these early 'rice paper' inner sleeves provided a degree of protection MUCH HIGHER than any other material used ever since.

(f)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER:

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has two tiny, almost invisible, pinholes (or staple holes) in one corner. These tiny holes are NOT cutout holes.

-        Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

-        Cover has a small quality control (inspection) stamp on the back panel   (BARELY VISIBLE)

-        Cover has a partially split top seam (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters); This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a SMALL piece of transparent scotch tape

-        Cover has a partially split spine (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)

-        The cover has a few tiny scratch marks on the front side

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.  (BARELY VISIBLE)

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER
