Now here is a detailed overview of this records condition.

SLEEVE REVIEW

FRONT.

Slightly glossy but not laminated. No names or stickers. Some creasing and very early signs of ring wear. No bad marks or indented line. There is a tiny circular indent in Jimis hair. Has a good patina, no pristine by any means but pretty good considering the age.

BACK.

No names or sticker. Some grubby marks, and ring wear. There's a couple of areas where the cover surface has rubbed off revealing the whiter under paper see top of Jimis hair. Looks aged but not worn out.

SPINE.

No splits. Some text visible F Gypsys has rubbed off. Some compression and moderate rubbing present. Not perfect but not the worst Ive seen.

OPENING.

Not too bad. Light feathering and creasing, couple of bumps. No rips though which is good.

CORNERS.

All corners have rubbing as you can see. Some splitting at the opening edge corners, about 6mm each.

COOL FEATURES.

The withdrawn sleeve featuring the amazing dolls made by Saskia De Boer. Title spelt as Gypsys, but on the label it reads Gypsies. This cover was withdrawn due to complaints about the unregistered use of the images of John Peel, Brian Jones and Bob Dylan. This is still the best version of the cover.

INNER SLEEVE REVIEW

British patent number 800518  973939. Plastic bags can be dangerous text. Made in England B.f 0670. No splits, no names or writing. Some discolouring and coffee stain on rear beside circular window.

I will also provide a plain white inner for shipping.

LABELS

SIDE ONE. Nice looking. Not names or stickers. Some spindle marks present and wear around the spindle hole mostly on side A. Both grade Very Good

VISUAL GRADES

SIDE ONE.

A little dusty. You can see that this has been played often. Plenty of unmarked surface area. There are numerous fine surface marks caused by sleeve removal, cleaning, fingernails, the usual suspects. These are all very light and mostly superficial. There are no long or hard scratches. Some shorter more moderate marks here and there. I am grading this side as Very Good.

SIDE TWO.

Ok, again plenty of unmarked areas. Again light superficial marks are present. We have a few moderate scratches the longest being a couple off inches over the last two tracks. I didnt hear any clicking that could be associated with it during play back. Near this scratch are the other offenders. To its left there is a scratch about an inch long over track three. To its right there are two fine scratches about 1.5 inches long configured in an X arrangement. Again no repeating ticks were heard because of them, but they probably account for the very occasional pop or click I heard. This side grades as Good.

AUDIO GRADINGS (typed as I listen)

SIDE ONE.

T1. Who Knows. Some light crackle in the empty lead in. Some nice separation in the mix of instruments especially the drums. Some light crackle during the first few bars. Nice warm recording. There's a quick tick during the vocal solo. No unwanted distortion of high and low notes. There is a pop during the guitar solo, may have been dust. The bass at the end sounds great. There are a couple of mild ticks. Grades VG minus

T2.

Machine gun. Spoken word intro is pretty quiet and a bit of dusty crackle can be heard behind Jimis voice. When Jimi freaks out on some super high notes in the solo the sound does not distort, nice and clear. Harmony background vocal section sounds great. Really good mix between the instruments and vocals. During the breakdown when it gets really quiet dusty crackle can be heard more than usual. Two clicks at the very end when it is silent and just before the audience starts clapping. Over all this track sounds VG.

A very good sounding side with a small handful of pops, background crackle can be heard throughout. It is not unacceptable and can be noticed more in quieter sections. I will grade this side as very good minus for the cautious. But it sounds great to my ear.

SIDE TWO.

T1.

Changes. The spoken intro is quiet, some very light crackles can I hear. I love this track by the way. I'm having a bit of a boogie. Sounds good and clear, pretty warm mix. Grades Very Good

T2.

Power of soul. Another stomping track in my opinion. Everything is sounding very good so far. Guitar and bass both sound good in the mix. Grades Very Good plus

T3.

Message of love. Another cool track. In fact the whole album is cool. Sound is sound pretty good here too. No complaints, sounded top. Grades as Very good plus

T4.

We gotta live together. Some mild crackle in the intros background. Couple of quick low level pops a few bars in. This sounds like the band having a bit of a jam. Grades as very good plus.

Overall a very good sounding side with no serious sound problems. Background crackle can be heard throughout as would be deemed normal, most noticeable in very quiet sections. This side as a whole grades Very Good Plus.

FINAL THOUGHTS

A classic album for both content and cover. I much prefer this cover than the later pressings. This is a good playing copy that is not pristine but certainly not at the bottom of the grading scale either. I'd say that this copy is around the 5.5 out of 10 mark.

GRADING YOUR VINYL

I use the classic U.K Rare Record Guide grading system. Detailed below are their guidelines.

MINT

The LP or single is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items are in perfect condition.

EXCELLENT

The LP or single shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.

VERY GOOD

The LP or single has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and an occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover and contents without any major defects.

GOOD

The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing edges, spine splits, discoloration, etc.

All records come with a protective poly sleeve, and new white inner. Records are shipped outside of the sleeve within reinforced cardboard packaging to ensure safety during transit.
