Deftones make a welcome return after a 3 year gap since 2000's White Pony with the first single off their soon to be released fourth album Deftones. Terry Date is once again producing for the groups crushing ballad.
Slung in with the likes of Linkin Park etc in the category of nu-metal, the Sacramento quintet don't really deserve to get the critism the former take for making bland, emotionless music. Minerva (named after the Romano-Etruscan goddess of wisdom) is a return to a more riff-based formula following songs such as Teenager on White Pony. The track is almost hypnotic-like swinging gently with Chino Moreno almost sighing at times over the constant, bludgeoningly mesmorizing riff.
Minerva sees Moreno produce a spiritually positive and up-lifting chorus singing 'And God bless you all, For the song you saved us...' backed up by a powerful sonic-blast from the guitars. Chino Moreno is seldom predictable and lyrics on this track border on being poetic. The Deftones' front man's lyrics are both mysterious and yet extermly emotinally conveyed to listener.
This single suggests that the new album Deftones will see the band continue the good form they have shown throughout their career so far; from the charged hardcore of debut-Adrenaline, through to more expansive Around The Fur and finally the melodic and more textured White Pony.
A positive step by Deftones who continue to grow musically. Class is write all over this track with plenty more expected from the forthcoming album!
