Neil Young recorded this gloom-and-doom masterpiece in late 1972, in the midst of a serious illness. In addition to overcoming personal challenges of all kinds, he also had to overcome the problem of performing live. This is one of the most respectable of all Neil Young 'live' recordings, although it may as well be a studio album, because it contains all-new material, unavailable anywhere else. Neil Young himself chose not to make this album available in any format, until such times CDs can properly reflect analog technology. And, as of today, December 20, 2018,  it is official: there are now only two (2) albums uncle Neil elected not to release on CD: this one, and his 1972 “Journey through the past”. I think it is a safe bet that we will never – ever – see these two albums reissued on CD.  The result: this great album has been unavailable in any way, manner or format for almost 40 years!!! THE WHITE LABEL PROMO, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed to the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals": the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

 

In this case, though, this is a rather moot point,  since this rare promo-only MONO version of the album was never commercially released to begin with.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

 

(b)          The album comes with the original insert/lyrics sheet/poster still intact.

 

(c)           The record is apparently pressed on a RELATIVELY  thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type),  vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl either.

 

(d)          White Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 100:1.

 

(e)           In addition, promo-only MONO pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its stereo counterpart. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber monos by a ratio of at least 300:1.

 

(f)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

 

 

·                               THE COVER

 

 

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

 

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

 

-        Cover has a visible "wrinkle"(crease)  in one of the corners and a smaller one in another

 

-        Visible shelf wear noted on the opening side

 

-        Minor shelf wear noted on the remaining three seams (nothing significant)

 

-        Cover has three corners slightly worn / dinged (nothing significant)

 

-        Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1.

 

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine  (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)
