Whilst '!' featured some wonderful moments, as an album it was overlong and unfocused, The MUSICSTRANGE , anarchic, avant-garde interludes, spoken word sections and touchesof weird humor. Thankfully, ' This Is...Gracious! ! ' is much more about TheMUSIC . This is reflected in both The epic, twenty-four minute LongFrom momentsof serene instrumental calmTo blistering segmentsof pacey, intricate guitar-and-mellotron-drenched rock, andThe album's stand-out piece 'CBS' (Don't ask; I don'tKnow what it stands FOR ). 'CBS' is A marvelous track, AA mockery outofThe seven minute runningTime ;if only it were longer. The rest of TheTo scaleThe peaks reachedOnTheFirst half, yet there isSTILL plenty that should please fans of classic-era progressive rock, especially inThe imaginative playingof guitarist Alan Cowderoy andThe almost soulful vocalsof Paul Davis. Imagine KING CrimsonA senseof humor, andYou childof getThe sonic picture. Whilst both Gracious albums are highly recommended, this second - and final - release From this sadly-ignored five-piece is well worth investigating. (stefro / progarchives.com)
