For your consideration is a rare vintage 10 inch 78 rpm by Frank Luther entitled The Akron Disaster b/w When the Goldenrods Are Waving. The USS Akron was the largest helium filled airship and was the most ambitious and high tech military airship ever constructed. Airships had been used in WWI and were being used as a form of luxury transport both domestically and to Europe. It was seen as a shining symbol of American progress and modern achievement. The USS Akron was able to dock and deploy military aircraft whilst in flight and could fly to Europe and back without the need to refuel. In April 1933, however, the airship was caught in a storm off of New Jersey and all except 3 aboard perished. Although the Hindenberg disaster remains much more well known and was the disaster that ended serious pursuit of the airship as a viable form of transport, the Akron disaster was actually more than 4 times costlier in lives and spelled the end of the American military's faith in airship's as worthy of further development. It is said that prolific American songster Bob Miller wrote this tune within a day of the disaster. Fascinating piece of history. Cool one!
All of our old shellac and vinyl 78 records are packed with utmost care and precaution so as to ensure they arrive to you in the same condition in which they were shipped out. I have extensive experience shipping 78s. For an in depth explanation of my shipping methods, see the bottom of this page. All items will be shipped within 3 days of purchase. All good faith offers thoroughly considered.
Keep in mind that for the highest fidelity reproduction results, a correct sized, well maintained stylus should always be used and antique records should also always receive a deep cleaning with a stiff bristled brush and a non-alcohol based soap. I do not provide grading beyond what is required by eBay. If the photographs prove insufficient, do not hesitate to reach out with a question, as well as any other type of inquiry related to an item.
All 78 rpm records, vinyl or shellac, will be shipped sandwiched between either thick cardboard or some spare 78 rpm discs to provide substantial reinforcement for uneven pressure placed on a package during shipment. The record sandwich is then suspended in packing peanuts on all sides. Packing peanuts are the optimal durable memory material as they will insulate your item against any acute forces such as a fall or any type of blow and unlike bubble wrap will not pop and lose their shape if subjected to a strong force.
