Product Description
FEATHERS moves retro-styled indie-rockers Dead Meadow even deeper into the territory of dark, late-1960s psychedelia. While previous albums HOWL FROM THE HILLS and SHIVERING KING AND OTHERS were filled with riff-happy rockers that owed a debt to Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, FEATHERS aligns the ensemble more closely with mid-period Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix's spacier jams, and--at times--early Sonic Youth. While the vibe here is still undoubtedly heavy, the tempos are slower, the reverb level higher, and the guitar solos spiral off even more beautifully into the stratosphere.
Dead Meadow's second release for Matador Records, FEATHERS shows a band hitting its stride. Jason Simon's high, moaning vocals and gothic-hippie poetry are only coloring for the overall sonic canvas, but the group's ability to make truly mesmerizing webs of heady, dual-guitar bliss has crystallized. Whether on dungeon-dark dirges ("Let's Jump In"), chiming drone-pop ("At Her Open Door"), or mid-tempo post-punk ("Get Up on Down"), the band effectively creates shadowy, swirling black holes of sound. The results will please fans of trippy, early-'80s goth-rock, as well as those looking to relive the spookier side of the '60s.
