Up for auction: Both jacket cover versions of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s 1977 Street Survivors LP.
The Flame Version was released just three days before the horrific plane crash that killed and injured several of the band members and crew. At the urging of Steve Gaines widow, MCA changed the cover jacket artwork to a plain black background. Essentially, they took the back cover with a plain black background, and place it on the front of the album. They replaced the back cover with song and production information in bright yellow/orange letters against a black background. The Flame Version is MCA-3029. It is in fair to good condition, showing age appropriate wear. I’ve never place the vinyl on a turntable. The LP has been inside a heavy plastic outer sleeve since I obtained it decades ago.
The reissued cover jacket version reads: MCA-1687 MCA-37213. The front photo of the band was moved from the back cover of the original issue. The back cover art was replaced with song and production information. On the reissued “black cover” version, at the bottom rear cover, it reads: “This album previously released by MCA Records, Inc., under different jacket artwork”
These are great display items with an interesting story, especially if they were framed side by side.
