LEE HAZLEWOOD "LEE HAZLEWOODISM: ITS CAUSE & CURE" Rare U.S. 1967 mono promo LP (MGM) E-4403 VG+/M-. Country, Rock & Pop cult hero delivers a hard to find solo masterpiece.
The cult surrounding the recordings of Lee Hazlewood has only grown following his death in 2007. He is best known for his work with Duane Eddy & Nancy Sinatra but his songs have also been recorded by Dino, Desi & Billy, Gram Parsons, Vanilla Fudge, Ann-Margaret, Gabor Szabo, Dean Martin & even Frank Sinatra himself among many others. Lee was Nancy Sinatra's “Svengali” writing & producing her hit “These Boots Are Made For Walkin'” as well as their great duet “Some Velvet Morning” in the 1960s. Solo records under his own name have been more elusive. 1967's “Lee Hazlewoodism: Its Cause & Cure” was his second album with MGM Records. It has a bit of a split personality but still contains some worthwhile idiosyncratic material. Side 1 is devoted to songs spoken over sympathetic arrangements by Billy Strange. Tales of the Old West mixed with his recent adventures in Paris. The best of these is “Jose” about a young bullfighter that meets a fateful end. Think of the latter-day Leonard Cohen & you get some idea of the sound on these tracks. Conversely, side 2 is comprised of mostly up-tempo novelty tunes such as “Home (I'm Home)” & “Suzi Jane Is Back In Town” A Dylan influence is evident on the wordplay of “In Our Time” & “Dark In My Heart”. All in all, an album worthy of it’s cult following w/“Jose” rising to classic status.
