Summary: The Rite of Spring is a ballet and orchestral concert work. It was written for the 1913 Paris season of Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes company, with original choreography by Vaslav Nijinsky and stage designs, costumes and story development by artist and mystic Nicholas Roerich. The work represents pagan Russia and tells the story of an ancient pagan society that performs necessary rituals for the coming of spring as an absolute means of survival. The idea for the work came to Stravinsky in 1910 when he was composing "The Firebird" for the same group.
About The Composer: Igor Stravinsky was a Russian-born composer who revolutionized 20th-century music. He was born on June 17 1882 in Oranienbaum and later became a naturalized U.S. citizen. He rose to fame in the early 1900s for his compositions for the Ballets Russes; his most famous work is this, The Rite of Spring, which provoked riots when it premiered. He died on 6th April 1971 in New York City.
About the Conductor: Igor Markevitch was a Russian-born composer and conductor who became a naturalized Italian and French citizen. He was born on 9th August 1912 in Kiev, Ukraine, and died on 7th March 1983 in Antibes, France. Markevitch is known for his highly original works as a composer and his conducting of classical music such as this work.
About the Performers: The Philharmonia Orchestra is a world-class symphony orchestra based in London. It was founded in 1945 by Walter Legge, a classical music record producer for EMI. They are known for their accurate and passionate performances of both baroque music and contemporary works.
Black Vinyl: Although less pleasing to the eye, the overall sound quality of a black vinyl disc is generally better than the popular picture disc versions.
