A commercial bomb when it was released, 'Village Green' is now considered Ray Davies' masterpiece. Assembled using songs recorded over the previous two years, the album is magnificently tied together with songs about British lifestyles over the century.
It was the last album made by the original quartet, but this is mostly Davies' show, a reaction of sorts against modern times in both its nostalgic themes and the pastoral tone of the songs.
