Continuing another sale run of Great, Original, Mercury Living Presence Stereo albums, on offer here is the Famous and Celebrated 1962 radiant performances of the virtuoso Prokofiev Piano Concerto No. 3 and the striding Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No.1 with the young, impetuous, fiery talent Byron Janis at the keyboard. A supreme artifact of musical detente at the time, the production of this album involved travel of highly skilled Mercury sound technicians and equipment to the then Soviet Union. There these forces captured scintillating performances by the touring Janis with competitive Russian orchestral forces inspiring truly awesome and magnificent renditions of these core Russian concertante works. Simply Brilliant, late Romantic and Modern Era symphonic excess and all perfectly recorded and transmitted. Penguin Guide has got the right critical take here, saluting "the American technical team brilliantly captured the warmly romantic and chimerical interpretation which resulted...the solo playing stands alongside that of Horowitz in this repertoire...Even now the recording is impressive for the clarity of texture and subtle detail with a warm acoustic." (TOO TRUE!) And these great scores are revealed to best advantage by original Mercury Living Presence Stereo Sonics via 35mm Magnetic Tape recordings--then and always an order of magnitude better than any other stereo vinyl recordings of the era. And all this on the Original Mercury Living Presence Stereo disk, Serial No. SR 90300 with Earliest Pressings on Very Heavy-Gauge Vinyl. Disk deadwax hand-engraved CCFR 1 P17 (Side 1) and CTFR 1 P17 (Side 2) indicating coveted First Edition and Earliest Pressings. Disk is in remarkably fine condition, clearly treasured by prior owners. Close visual inspection under bright light shows no imperfections at all and retention of the highest gloss sheen on both sides. Appears very little played. Play grading shows bright, brilliant, full-spectrum sound typical of superior and superb Mercury recording and processing techniques of the era. Disk easily rates to Near-Mint. Interior paper sleeve in Near-Mint condition. Jacket also Near-Mint presenting glossy front and fully intact rear and seams. Not a Cut-Out. Appears as if printed yesterday. Thus a highly collectible exemplar of one of the virtuoso Byron Janis' legendary piano performances with gorgeous Russian orchestra accompaniments. Disk also easily qualifies as among the very finest early Mercury Stereo albums.
