Caravan, Soft Machine , Hatfield & THEA few examplesofThe Canterbury rock scene. Many of these groups tended To be jazzy with bizarre experiments thrown in.

Another example is Khan, who only released this One and only album, SPACEOn DeramRecords (Same label that gaveUsThe Moody Blues,CAMEL , EAST OF EDEN ,KEEF HARTLEY BAND , early Cat Stevens and many more). Well, unlike Soft Machine or Hatfield & THEMUSIC tendenciesToSound more likeA standard early '70s prog rockband withHEAVY organ work and hard rock-influenced vocals. But STILL , ifYou like Gong or Hatfield& THE North,YouSTILL need this album, asTheband features Steve Hillage and Dave Stewart (not ofThe eurythmics,of course). The band also featured bassist Nick Greenwood and drummer Eric Peachy. Greenwood had played with The Crazy World ofBROWN . Both Hillage and Stewart were in A bandSTILL teenagers) in whichTheband Arzachel quickly became and releasedA self-titled album in 1969 (but dueTo contractual difficulties, allThe members were not performing under their real names). The band quickly changed its name To Egg, and Hillage left, and that bandTwo albums, Egg (1970) andThe Polite Force (1971), before breaking up (although Egg did reunite in 1974 and released an album calledThe Civil Surface). Then came Khan, who was To be circled around Hillage, and in fact Theband didn't initially feature Dave Stewart, but someone byThe Surnameof Dick Henningham. But then he left, and Hillage found Dave Stewart, and this was The lineup that RecordedSPACE Shanty. A lot of times this album reminds me Aif Hatfield& THE North whatAHEAVY prog rockband ,A lot of Dave Stewart's trademark fuzz organCan already be found here, although he also usesA more typical Hammond organSound too. He doesn't use much electric piano, aside From "Stranded". Steve Hillage is STILL in search ofHIS trademark lead guitar style, althoughYouCan hear itOn partsofThe opening cut, " SPACE Shanty". More often than not, Hillage's guitar style is pretty of From countless other prog and jazz rock bandsTheTime (butof course, he'll be ableToPerfectHIS style after joining gong). of Of course The MUSICA classic. Often The MUSICToOne thing, as each song goes through several changes, never boringThe listener. I really Can n't find AOn this album as it's allofTheSame quality. A new version of Khan was ToSPACE Shanty was released, withA new bass player, but neverRecorded , as Hillage STILL didn't feel confident enough leading A bandTo wait until he released Fish Rising in 1975,HISFirst solo offering). So Hillage First joined Keven Ayers bandFORA short period, before joining Gong atThe endof 1972. Khan, along with Caravan, is The closest ToThe World Of Canterbury rock, although Khan'sMUSIC isHEAVIER and not as pop-oriented as Caravan's. SoifYou 'reA Gong or Hatfield & THE North fan, or evenifYou 're not, butYou like that early '70s organ-dominated prog rockSound , thenSPACE Shanty should be in your collection.
