Up for sale are two rare first edition Blue Note LPs. “Orgy In Rhythm Vol. 1” by Art Blakey, and “Fuego” by Donald Byrd. Both of these are very worn. I usually do not bother listening anything this rough, but vintage Blue Note albums are rare in any condition.
Art Blakey:
Record: Fair/Poor.
It’s been a bit since I’ve played the whole album, but I don’t recall any skips or repeats. Saying that, this album sounds a little like raindrops hitting an umbrella. It’s very noisy. Only reason it sounds as good as it does is the loud, full mastering by Rudy Van Gelder. Labels show heavy wear.
“RVG” is hand etched. Has “9M” in runouts. Has “New York 23” label variation. Deep groove label. Has Plastylite “ear” in both runouts.
Cover: fair/poor.
The lamination has been peeled off. There’s damage from tape on the front cover. The back cover is even worse. Writing and stamps are present. Seams are taped. see photos.
Donald Byrd:
Record: Fair/Poor.
The noise is marginally less loud on this one. Saying that, I seem to recall some skips and one repeat towards the end of one side (then again, I use to play this album on low end equipment).
Stamped “RVG” in Deadwax. Has “9M” in deadwax. 47 W. 63rd address label with deep grooves and copyright symbol at the end of the word “Note”. Has Plastylite “ear”.
Cover: fair.
Biggest flaw with the cover is taped seams. The taped seams are starting to split. Otherwise, the cover is decent for its age. The lamination is in decent shape. The back cover has some stains. See photos.
So the fact of the matter is, these aren’t in great shape by any stretch of the imagination. I highly recommend playing these with a stylus that is forgiving of surface noise and scratches.
Or if you’re looking for something that would look cool framed on the wall, these albums would fit the bill.
