ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND "IDLEWILD SOUTH" U.S. 1979 LP exact reissue of the 2nd Allman Brothers Band album (Polydor) CPN-0197 M-/M-. The classic Southern Rock band with the original line-up of Duane & Gregg Allman, Dicky Betts, Berry Oakley, Butch Trucks & Jai Johanny Johansen. Featuring "Midnight Rider", "Revival", "Hoochie Coochie Man" + 4 more blues rockers.

When in college, working at the campus radio station, I would frequently venture up to Cleveland to catch the weekend Rock concerts at the Allen Theatre. The year was 1969 & the Youngbloods were headlining. I really liked “Darkness Darkness” & “Get Together” was a classic, so I decided to check out the show. The opening act was a relatively unknown group- the Allman Brothers Band out of Macon, Georgia. As soon as they took the stage the audience knew they were in for a unique event. The onslaught of 2 lead guitarists- Duane Allman & Dicky Betts, 2 drummers- Butch Trucks & Jai Johanny Johanson, a strong bass player- Berry Oakley & a great vocalist & organist- Gregg Allman was overwhelming. They played most of the tracks off their debut album (“The Allman Brothers Band”) & some material from their soon to be released second LP (“Idlewild South”) & literally blew the crowd away. The second album came hot on the heels of their first album & we got a preview of Gregg's “Midnight Rider” & Muddy Waters' “Hoochie Coochie Man” with Berry Oakley on lead vocal that night. Second guitarist Dicky Betts also got a chance to shine with his compositions "Revival" & "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed". After their 40 minute set, the audience was stunned & over half of the crowd left in a daze before the Youngbloods even took the stage! By the time of this 1979 reissue, Capricorn Records had been bought out by the Polygram conglomerate & their catalog was reissued on Polydor Records. Years earlier both Duane Allman & Berry Oakley had been involved in fatal motorcycle accidents which claimed their lives. Even though many live albums have appeared over the years (including the great "Fillmore East” set) with the exception of a few tracks from “Eat A Peach”, this is the only chance we get to hear the original Allman Brothers Band in a studio setting. If you don't already have this album, don't pass up the opportunity to own a Southern Rock milestone.
