One gets the feeling that, as 1966 drew to a close amid an incredible acceleration of innovations in the pop and rock world, the Hollies felt the need to prove themselves capable of artistic growth despite having established a very winning formula. Stop! Stop! Stop! -- the U.S. release of a British album titled For Certain Because... -- was their first album entirely composed of original material, and it echoed pop's increased sophistication with fuller, more adventurous arrangements and more personal, folk-rock-influenced compositions. Such was the intense competition of the time that this record couldn't hope to take on Revolver, Aftermath, or Face to Face, but it nevertheless remains an admirable effort that may stand as the group's most accomplished album (greatest-hits packages excepted) of the '60s. the Hollies were very much a pop group and didn't let their somewhat more sober and introspective compositions stand in the way of their glittering harmonies and jangling guitars. Occasional brass, banjo, bells, and vibrating piano embellish their basic rock instrumentation on this pleasant, if hardly earthshaking, work. The circus-like "Stop! Stop! Stop!," with its manic banjo, was a hit on both sides of the Atlantic; the good-natured "Pay You Back with Interest" was a Top 30 hit in America; and the jazzy "Tell Me to My Face" was one of their best '60s album tracks.

You know that you are good when (1) Everly Brothers want you to sing vocal harmonies on one of their albums (2) David Crosby and Steven Stills want your lead singer in their band. Well, this is what happened to Hollies, one of the greatest British Invasion-era bands.

(a)         WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

 

(b)         The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

 

(c)         Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its FAKE ("electronically rechannelled") stereo counterpart. We estimate that FAKE stereo copies of this album outnumber monos by a ratio of at least 10:1.

 

(d)         The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

 

(e)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

 

 

·                          THE COVER

 

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

 

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

 

-       Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3  (front side) and 2 (back side)

 

-       Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging (nothing significant)

 

-       Visible shelf wear noted on the top and bottom seams

 

-       Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine  (nothing significant)

 

-       Cover has a minor 'bump' (dent) on the spine (BARELY VISIBLE)

 

-       Cover has a light "wrinkle" (crease)  in one of the corners.  (VISIBLE ON FRONT SIDE ONLY)

 

-       Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged  / bent.
