George Harrison wasn't doing all too well by 1976. Dark Horse and Extra Texture were blasted by critics, sold poorly and only had one solid hit ("You"), and he had just come off of a tour that had gone so wrong that George ceased touring until the 90s. Most people had grown tired of Harrison's dull somber songs often concerning the faults in humanity.

Thankfully Harrison decided to start having fun again upon the creation of his Dark Horse record label. One thing I enjoy about Harrison's albums is that they're all cohesive and have different feels to them. Here, it's a loose joyful funk vibe that is frequently anchored through Harrison's utilization of the organ, and it makes all the songs fit well together.

First off, both the leading singles are top notch, and provide us examples of Harrison's goofy humour. "This Song" was inspired by the plagiarism accusations surrounding his 1970 hit My Sweet Lord with lyrics like "This song isn't black or white and as far as I know don't infringe on anyone's copyright so..." It's loads of cheeky fun and is packed with a sick Tom Scott saxophone solo. But my pick for best song on the album easily goes to "Crackerbox Palace", with its nonsensical lyrics and synthesizers giving it this silly psychedelic sound, something that wouldn't have sounded too out of place with Sgt Pepper's if it was a little less mellow. Both of these songs come highly recommended with their music videos, directed by Eric Idle from Monty Python. After all, how many artists are willing to pop out of a baby carriage and look cross eyed at the camera while saying "It's twue it's twue"?

Everyone knows the hits, how about the rest of the album? It's remarkably consistent. The first track has some strong bass and energy, "Beautiful Girl" is a gorgeous composition, akin to a weaker version of Something. "True Love" makes my heart melt upon hearing George sing Guardian Angels. Lastly, "Pure Smokey" is one of the smoothest songs I've ever heard, slipping into your brain and melting you into your seat before fading away. Truly (or should I say twuly?) an honourable tribute to Smokey Robinson.

My only knock against the album are the two songs that slow things down. "Dear One" comes to mind as it kills the momentum built by the intro song, and the song just plods along for five minutes. It's not offensive but it's a pretty boring listen to sit through. "Learning How to Love You" suffers from the same issues, although I think it's still a decent song it loses points for being a weak closer to an album that was pulsing with energy and joy otherwise.

Thirty Three & 1/3 shows us a lot of the things to love about Harrison. It's my favorite album by him not named All Things Must Pass.

·      CONDITION:

·      THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)         THE ALBUM IS STILL FACTORY SEALED AND IS BELIEVED TO BE PERFECTLY MINT. Please note: sealed items are assumed to be mint and are sold as-is, as we have no way of inspecting them.

(b)         The record comes in its original, custom, inner sleeve, which is UNIQUE to this album (we can see it through the small cutout saw mark)

(c)         The record is apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                          THE COVER

COVER IS NEAR MINT, STILL SEALED AND COVERED IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP   (A SMALL PIECE OF SHRINK WRAP IS MISSING)

(PLEASE NOTE: THE SHRINK WRAP HAS SEPARATED ALONG ABOUT 10% ON BOTH TOP AND BOTTOM SIDES AS WELL AS THE OPENING SIDE, BUT THE ALBUM IS STILL VISIBLY SEALED)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-       Cover has a small cutout saw-mark (an indent about 3-5 mm long ) on one of its seams.

-       The cover has a few tiny scratch (pressure) marks on the front side  (nothing significant)

-       Cover has one corner slightly worn / dinged (nothing significant)

-       Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine  (nothing significant)

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER
