Laurel Aitken:

Real Name: Lorenzo Aitken, Laurel Aitken

Profile:  Born April 22, 1927 on Cuba, Laurel Aitken moved to Jamaica with his family as a child. In the 1950s, he became one of Jamaica's first recording artists, standing on the edge between r'n'b, boogie and ska. In the 1960s Aitken moved to England, where he managed to score a few chart hits and continued to play with various ska bands until his death from a heart attack in 2005, July 17.

The eldest son of blues legend John Mayall, Gaz began collecting records aged 17, bulk buying cheap reggae and ska collections down street markets such as Portbello road and brick lane at a time when it seemed no one wanted them. In late 1986 he formed his band The Trojans, and for the last nineteen years has been running his own record label Gaz's Rockin' Records, producing ska acts and artistes around the world.

 

For all the boastful accolades that club promoters plaster on their flyers, few have the kudos earned from throwing a successful party every single week for the past three decades. Then again, not everyone runs an institution like Gaz s Rockin Blues. Veteran DJ and musician Gaz Mayall, son of legendary bluesman John, has been treating London to a freestyle blend of ska, reggae, rockabilly, rhythm n blues and rock n roll since 1980, when his club night provided a late night home for the capital’s young rebel dance music, whether you were a skin, rocker or rudeboy. It’s still going strong: you ll find throngs of people swinging to guest live bands and DJs every Thursday night at Soho basement dive St Moritz. It’s also the kind of hangout that keeps new generations coming, so the crowd always stays fresh. Those who aren’t old enough to go yet can mingle with everyone else at Gaz s sound-system at Notting Hill Carnival, where he s been causing a roadblock since 1982, or at his stage at Glastonbury, which he has run for the past three years. This week Gaz has two birthday parties to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of his night, and to THIRTY YEARS OF GA Z S ROCKIN BLUES, and to further mark the occasion he has written a book, Gaz’s Rockin Blues: The First Thirty Years , highlighting the club s colourful characters and legendary acts. --Kate Hutchinson, Time Out July 1-7 2010
