Serge Gainsbourg may primarily have been known outside his native land for the heavybreathing masterpiece 'Je T'Aime (Moi Non Plus)', the only French song ever to top the British charts, but to those at home he stood as one of the more potent cultural figures of post-war France. His poetry was compared to Rimbaud and Baudelaire, his morality to the Marquis de Sade, yet he was awarded the title of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres, his country's highest artistic honour. Serge Gainsbourg died in 1991, but his legend has continued to grow. In 2010 Joann Sfar's film biography Serge Gainsbourg Vie Héroïque was released staring Eric Elmosnino as the man himself. Like that movie, this compilation is a starting point in the investigation of a unique and idiosyncratic talent.
