The Ninth is far from the most popular of Mahler's works; it never caught on with audiences, conductors or critics in the same way Mahler's 1st and 5th symphonies did. But with Solti/CSO we have good middle ground... a recording in which the lighthearted Landler and the dionysiac histrionics of the Rondo-Burleske are brought to the fore, while the outer movements are played bittersweetly and with the emotion that demonstrates how this was the most complex and heartbreaking of Mahler's symphonies. An incredible experience and a most solid performance of Mahler's final completed work!
