Deep Purple – Fireball – 1971 – Even though it was the second Deep Purple ensemble, the combination of Blackmore, Gillan, Lord, Glover and Paice was the classic line-up. And the three classic Purple albums came from this band, sometimes referred to as Deep Purple Mark II. In Rock, Fireball and Machine Head make up the Deep Purple holy trinity. Lord’s organ powers through the title track and Blackmore sizzles throughout. We get a sense not only of Gillan’s vocal range, as we did on In Rock, but also of his quirky lyrics. Deep Purple made a lot of good albums both before and since, but this is one of their three essentials that helped define heavy metal for generations to come.
