Judy Garland –
THE LETTER –
Capitol Side-Logo Original STAO 1188 Gatefold
This 1959 release was a concept album created by arranger Gordon Jenkins to peruse a relationship between two lovers from first kiss to demise.
The woman is Judy Garland, the man, baritone John Ireland, and though, as you would expect, the larger role is Miss Garland’s by far, this relationship unfolds continually, even includes conversation between the two at a club in NYC.
Fact is, at the end of the recording, the full orchestra and chorus stood, applauded, and pressed close to congratulate the three stars, Garland, Ireland, and Jenkins, they were so taken by the process, which was quite unique at the time.
This is the original release, which indeed had a letter attached to the front cover. Now, only the envelope has survived, but the gatefold is without major fault; the record inside unmarked, near mint.
A musical trip well worth a visit.
