That method also helps avoid missing a Auction or forgetting to bid on the item.  EBay will enter your bid automatically at the LOWEST possible price for you. That means if your max bid is $50, but your current bid is only at $20 and nobody else bids then you still get it for $20 even though you entered $50. If you end up losing the sale it will NOT be because you have been had by a Sniper - it will be because it went beyond what you were willing to pay.
