Title:   “Can’t See for Lookin”

Label:   PRESTIGE ~ PR 7276.  Mono pressing on medium weight vinyl.   Label is yellow with black text, without deep groove.

Labels display “203 South Washington Ave, Bergenfield, N.J.” address.   “VAN GELDER” is stamped in the runout area on both sides.

Year:  1958

Personnel:

Red Garland – piano

Paul Chambers – bass

Arthur Taylor - drums

Condition:

DISC:  Vinyl is EXCELLENT with full original gloss.  Has been played a small number of times and handled with care.  There are a couple slight hairline paper scuffs but no serious or audible marks or problems.  Plays beautifully with superb fidelity.  Labels are clean.  This hard-to-find LP is one that you will never need to upgrade.

JACKET:   Jacket is VG with obvious signs of wear and handling, but still quite serviceable.   There is moisture damage to jacket, resulting in warping of cover (though disc is fine).  Front panel has outer layer rubbing wear at bottom and center of right side.  Approx 2” split at top of spine; remainder of seams have light wear.  No writing or stickers.  Not the best jacket, but certainly suitable to accompany the nice disc.

Track Listing

I Can’t See for Lookin’ Soon

Side Two:

Blackout Castle Rock

Review:

“Pianist Red Garland recorded many sets in the late 1950s and early '60s, often (as in this case) with bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Art Taylor.   Despite the length (under 35 minutes), this is a particularly strong example of Garland’s talents.  His block chords are distinctive, as is his use of space, and the music always swings.  The trio sounds in top form on "I Can't See For Looking," George Gershwin’s "Soon," "Blackout," and a driving version of the classic blues "Castle Rock."  Recommended.”
