ANTÓNIO WILLIAM
(with a beautiful Malangatana artwork cover)
7/45 RARE SINGLE
"MARRABENTA PHALAFENI + NI GASOLINA + BOBOLHANGWANA"
BULA 1001- MNW 002 - 1974
Malangatana Valente Ngwenya GOIH (Matalana, district of Marracuene, June 6, 1936 - Matosinhos, January 5, 2011) was a Mozambican artist and poet, internationally known by his first name "Malangatana", having produced works in various media and from drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, murals, poetry and music.

Marrabenta is a form of dance music typical of Mozambique and its name was derived from the Portuguese word: "bust". It incorporated several folk rhythms like Magika, Xingombela and Zukuta, being also subject to the western influence. It was developed in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, which until the independence of that country was known as Lourenço Marques.
It began in the late 1930s with older artists such as Fany Mpfumo and Dilon Djindji, who began their career in 1939. It became popular in the 1950s with ensembles like Djambu and Hulla-Hoope Harmonia.
The popularity of marrabenta reached a new peak in the 1980s with bands like Eyuphuro and Mozart's Marrabenta Star Orchestra. Later, the Mozambican band Mabulu mixes rap and marrabenta style.
