Mint (M)
A Mint record and cover are absolutely perfect in every way. The record has never been played.
Near Mint (NM or M-)
A Near Mint record is nearly perfect. The record may have been played and may have some barely noticeable scuffs, but it does not show any other visible defects. The record label does not have writing, stickers, "spindle marks" around the center hole, or other markings. Basically, a record in Near Mint condition looks like it just came from a retail store and the record was just opened. The cover may have barely noticeable impressions from the record inside (i.e., ring wear), but it has no creases, folds, seam splits, cut-out holes, or other similar defects.
Very Good Plus (VG+), Excellent (EX)
A Very Good Plus or, slightly better, Excellent record may show some minor signs of wear, including slight scuffs, light scratches, and/or slight warps. The record label may have very small writing and/or stickers, and/or slight "spindle marks" around the center hole, but the center hole will not be misshapen. The cover may also have slight creases, folds, ring wear, seam wear and/or a very minor seam split, very small writing and/or stickers, a cut-out hole, cut corner, and/or indentation, and/or other minor signs of general wear or handling. Basically, the record and cover have been taken care of and would be close to Near Mint except for some minor defects.
Very Good (VG)
The defects in a Very Good Plus record may be more pronounced, more numerous, and/or more visibly obvious in a Very Good record, including groove wear on the vinyl and/or light scratches that may be deep enough to feel with a fingernail. The record label or cover may have more writing, tape, stickers, residue from tape and/or stickers, and/or other similar defects or signs of wear. The cover may have more obvious and/or more numerous creases, folds, ring wear, seam splits, and/or other signs of wear.
Good (G), Good Plus (G+)
A Good or, slightly better, a Good Plus record may have significantly visible groove wear and/or very numerous and/or pronounced scratches. The record label or cover may have heavy writing, tape, stickers, residue from tape and/or stickers, and/or other similar defects or signs of heavy wear that are starting to overwhelm it. The cover may have heavy ring wear and/or significantly obvious seam splits, creases, folds, and/or other numerous signs of heavy wear.
Poor (P), Fair (F)
A Poor or, slightly better, Fair record may be cracked, broken, and/or very badly warped. The cover may be water-damaged, significantly split on all three seams, and/or heavily marred by wear or handling. The cover may barely keep the record inside it.
