Listen & watch before you buy:

Though I haven’t found any old film clips from the Ice Follies of 1950 on YouTube, there are several enjoyable vintage film clips to watch. These include a 1940’s newsreel of The International Ice Follies, World Skating Championships of 1950, early film clips of the Ice Capades, vintage film clips of Stars One Ice, and Star On Ice, and old film clips of the Vanities Ice Skating Show. There are also old film clips of early editions of Disney On Ice.

See more history notes on Ice Follies at bottom of this listing.

You may also want to search YouTube for film clips of the song titles listed above, and search for the singers and vocal group listed above, as well.

There are several show programs form the Ice Follies of 1950 here on eBay. One of those would make an excellent companion piece to this rare record set.

Additional notes on Ice Follies history:

The Ice Follies, formerly known as the Shiptads & Johnson Ice Follies, was a touring ice show featuring elaborate production numbers, similar in concept to Ice Capades.

The Ice Follies show was a variety show that included a chorus line called The Ice Folliettes, which led to synchronized figure skating, that famously, precisely performed a kick line and pinwheel on ice.

It was founded in 1936 by Eddie and Roy Shipstad, and Oscar Johnson. In later years the cast included Olympic skater Peggy Fleming, among others.

Founders: Eddie Shipstad, Roy Shipstad, Oscar Johnson

The Shipstad brothers were the sons of Swedish parents who had migrated to St. Paul, Minnesota. (The family name Skeppstedts was shortened to Shipstad.) When Eddie Shipstad was a typewriter salesman he became friends with a chemist named Oscar Johnson, while ice skating at local lakes. They practiced skating stunts together and were hired as half-time entertainment for the local professional hockey team, and later for the New York Rangers. Eddie’s brother Roy, himself a successful amateur skater, would later join them to perform charity shows and, eventually, as the Shipstads & Johnson Ice Follies.

Ice Follies produced the first, large scale, professional touring show in Tulsa, Oklahoma on November 7, 1936.

Ice Follies was featured in the Joan Crawford film “The Ice Follies of 1939”, produced by MGM.

In 1946, Ice Follies began coproducing Ice Cycles with Ice Capades. In 1949 Ice Follies became independent.

Roy Shipstad retired in 1950.
