INFO

I first heard “False Alarm” somewhen in the early 1990s somewhere at a Northern Soul allnighter...  I remember rushing to the deejay to ask for the title of this super-catchy upbeat tune and wanted to havea copy since then.   Unfortunately I couldn’t find one even though I asked all my dealer contacts (at that time I only had a few). More time passed with no clues or leads and I soon forgot about it.  BUT during last year’s visit to Manchester’s Soul weekender when I was booked to deejay there I encountered a “45rpm epiphany vision” while spending some hours down in a dealer- friend’s cellar. There it was in my hands - in the form of a red 45 on the Harthon label with the title “False Alarm” written on it.    I instantly remembered the energy of the tune and played it to a full thumping dancefloor on that very same day during the nighter. Since then the tune has been a constant crowd favourite and ‘floorpacker’ at our Soul Clubs here in Vienna with people dancing their socks off, clapping their hands off and sweating heavily whenever it gets played. This spirited new exposure and great reception at events has predictably pushed up prices right up for the original issue 45.   Northern Soul deejay legend Guy Hennigan remembers the record to be played first in UK at Blackpool Mecca in 1974 or at Wigan Casino coming originally out of Val Shivley`s shop or from producer Weldon McDougal III in Philladelphia and since then it has been played rarely by obscure and tasteful Rare Soul deejays who are lucky enough to own it.   The Volcanos who released “False Alarm” before the moving to Arctic Records in 1965 eventually achieved fame under the name "The Trammps" with chart hits like “Disco Inferno” but also doing many other smoother soulful tunes.   The Harthon label's studio band came into later prominence as the bedrock of MFSB and all the 70s Gamble/Huff disco hits doing the groundwork for the famous "Philly sound".   “False Alarm” is a perfect example of an upbeat, uptempo driving sixties Philly “Northern” Soul stomper with a quite unique instrumentation, a great break and a repetitive hookline that can put every Soul dancefloor onto another level!!   The Flipside “Movin’ And Groovin’” is a great danceable horn-driven funky instrumental perfect for a Deep Funk set!   In the 1960s when they were still “The Volcanos” major chart success was never achieved, but not so at SOUND of SOUL where it's the current No.1 spin in 2012!! (Jörg Recordshack January 2012)   The record is released and distributed by Austria's number one Black Music outlet/distro 'Record Shack'being its third official new release.
