July 12, 2020 Sounds crystal clear and fantastic to me. I listened to this probably 60,000 times in high school and there wasn't a single sample that I missed hearing here. Centered really well on my system and had a blast listening to this pressing. January 8, 2019
There's a lot of static/hiss on this LP. Is that just Beck being "lo-fi," or is my copy defective? November 28, 2018 This really should have been a 2LP....sound could be so much better! February 18, 2017 So, I've just made an A/B comparison of this release with my original 90's CD release and... as much as I'd want to say otherwise it just doesn't fare better, which is what I look for if forking over extra cash for vinyl. Now there are reasons I should have been able to catch beforehand. Timing of side A (and consequently of all single-LP releases of Odelay) clocks in at 28 minutes... when you pretend to cram that much music into one LP side something has to give - usually, bass and loudness. I kept turning down the volume when switching to CD. Overall result considering these issues is not really bad, but it's not stellar either. The only exception might be the hyper expensive 4-LP Original Recordings Group reissue, and that's the only registered Odelay version on Discogs that isn't a single LP and may be as good as it gets for this recording in vinyl form. This should have been an uncompressed 2-LP reissue. You'd fare better with the (infinitely cheaper) CD on this one. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ January 24, 2017 This record is very quiet and pretty flat. Compared to an AFX record I had on the other platter it was 8dB lower, had to crank the the vol up, gain up plus the master up... making it almost impossible to mix with. Sound does not have much fullness at all, not much time or effort spent on this attempt. Now I know why it was only $20 at the record store. Steer clear... December 14, 2016
edited over 2 years ago Like hhjack said, the sound isn't mind blowing but it's pretty good. If you have a good setup you'll be able to hear a lot of the interesting samples and instruments Beck uses pretty clearly, which definitely gives new life to the songs. However, I don't think this particular pressing was remastered by Bernie Grundman, if it was even remastered at all. The vocals could be a little weak at times, I'm not sure if this album was cut from a digital master or what but the mastering seems a little lazy to be BG. Also, don't flip out when you hear a lot of static on the side B song "readymade" it's recorded to sound like that. My CD copy is made to sound like an LP, you can here the needle spill into the runout grooves at the end of "Jack-Ass." It should be noted that the original recordings have a lot of surface noise and crackles from the samples Beck used and it is supposed to have a vintage turntable sound. For $20 bucks its worth it to pick up a copy. December 3, 2016 Not wanting to pay the price for an original, I've been waiting for this reissue for quite some time. Luckily, the wait was worth it. The pressing plays dead quiet and is centered correctly. And the sound, while not mind blowing, is quite good and makes wanting to own the Bong Load version less desirable. Recommended. December 2, 2016 Pressed at Pallas, cut by Bernie Grundman. Sounds fantastic so glad UMe reissued these and keeps reissuing great albums that need it! [r9436179] Release
