LOT OF 8 LP RECORDS
STEEL BANDS & ORCHESTRAS
GENRE: CALYPSO MUSIC
Also includes some Early Reggae, Ska, Mambo, Samba & Merengue.
Terminology note: I notice calypso records seem to have variations on spelling and terms. The term “orchestra” can be said of an 18-piece band or a small quintet. Terms like “ensemble”, “band”, “group”, “combo”, “trio”, “quartet”, “quintet”, etc. are sometimes stated with two or more variations on one album cover.
You’ll also see variations on terms “steel pan” or “steel drum” or simply “pan”. Also “steel pan player” or “pannist”. Also “steel band” or “steelband” or “steel-band” or “steel combo”, or “steel ensemble” or “steel orchestra”. as well various terms in Spanish, French, regional dialects, colloquials & Patois and other non-English languages of the Caribbean and Antilles.
This is a lot of 8 original record company LPs.
Most are first pressings, 1st editions.
Origin: Most of these records were purchased in the 1950’s & 1960’s by tourists in the Caribbean. Some were purchased at hotel gift shops, at the hotel cocktail lounges, and also aboard cruise ships.
These LPs were often purchased where the actual steel band groups were performing: at hotels, resorts, beach bars, tourist cocktail lounges, at tiki bars, at concert venues, at stadiums, at open-air bandshell concerts, etc.
Please see my other listings for calypso, mento, reggae, rocksteady, ska records, CDs and tapes. I’ve been collecting mento & calypso for over 35 years so I have some impressive vintage calypso LPs from Jamaica, Nassau (The Bahamas), Bermuda, Caribbean Virgin Islands, The Antilles, West Indies, Barbados, as well steel pan /steel orchestra / steel drum music from Trinidad & Tobago.
Thanks for viewing this offering: a lot of 8 vintage LPs.
Overall condition of the LP covers is very good.
A few have light attic scent, but no mold or mildew.
All LPs have been stored in a cool, dry archive room.
Records have not been cleaned. I leave that up to the buyer.
Please see all photos.
Questions welcome.
Please see photos for cover illustrations,
liner notes & song lists.
Here’s the list of LPs in (release-date) chronological order.
Some may not have a printed date,
so I researched through sites including Discogs.
