SAMANTHA FISH - Chills & Fever (180g Viny LPl, 2017, Import) **NEW**
Review from another site: 2017 was important in the career of the American singer-songwriter: with two albums released in the same year "Belle of the West" and "Chills & Fever". "Chills & Fever" is a bewitching disc from the first bite. The opening of the disc is entrusted to "He did it": a more rock version of the original that contains many elements that we will find in the rest of the disc: from the presence of a robust wind section to the choirs, from the voice that becomes more rich in nuances up to the omnipresent guitar which is its natural complement. The musical field ranges from R&B to soul up to touch the country-rock with "Little baby"; Samantha's voice, powerful as always, has increased in versatility and ductility as evidenced by the sensual "Hello stranger" by Barbara Lewis or "Either Way I Lose" by Nina Simone. In addition to these just mentioned, there are several covers taken from the blues and soul repertoire that give the whole work a 50s and 60s feel; above all "Hurts are gone" stands out: Samantha's version is stratospheric and the sound of the guitar, when it melts at the end of the refrain, evokes the ghost of Hendrix. Even in the very fast "You can't go" Samantha gives us another magic, with the fuzz effect guitar entering the second part. R&B returns with "You'll Never Change" while "Nearer To You" is clearly a declaration of love for sixty soul music. "Crow Jane" has been recorded by more than one artist over the years, in its version Samantha Fish returns to embrace the cigar-box to give life to the most markedly bluesy song on the CD. With "It's Your Voodoo Working" the guitarist from Kansas city captures the right groove, expands the original and "enchants" us with her rite of possession, transporting us towards funk, smoky and seductive atmospheres. Ideally responds "Somebody's Always Tryin" but this time the sound flow expands to touch psychedelia. To close this splendid album we find "I'll Come Running Over" captivating ballad that recalls the sound of the Blues Brothers.  2017 is a turning point, I said before, and in fact the changes are evident: starting with the hair that is no longer red but platinum blonde, the Fish-o-Caster has been replaced by a still splendid standard Gibson SG. Things change according to need and that of Samantha Fish seems to be the evolution of an artist who, starting from the blues, is exploring her talent in many directions, promising us many more authentic rock events. - Allmusic (Google translated from Italian)
