This auction is for the NUMBERED (1 of 3) Original LP for Mastering Comparison of Coleman Hawkins' "Hawkins! Alive! At The Village Gate". This pressing has special significance and collectability because it comes from Michael Hobson's Personal Archives. This is a truly a one of a kind collectible of one of the most highly sought after titles that Classic Records reissued. Evaluation notes by Michael Hobson.

Michael Hobson "Mastering Copy" Archives

These Mastering Copy LPs are the original issues or early pressings used for comparison purposes for the titles that Classic Records later reissued. The Classic approach was to play various versions of other LP releases of a title to get a feel for what the artist/producer or other reissue companies did in terms of eq’ing the original master for cutting an LP version.  Rather than master a legendary title like Belafonte at Carnegie Hall blindly, a comparison allows for a starting point to be able to faithfully reproduce a title respecting the original intentions of the artist and most often adding a little extra clarity or reality based in the cutting system purity and all the other aspects of the Classic Records LP production process.  Thus, Mastering Comparison copies were vital to the Classic Records reissue process.  Michael Hobson, founder of Classic Records has allowed his personal Mastering Comparison copies of many of Classic’s reissues to be offered up for those who may want to do the same comparisons done by Grundman and Hobson during the sessions. Each copy has a sticker certifying it as a genuine MH Classic Records Mastering Copy to assure authenticity and provide for collectibility and likely appreciation a piece of Classic Records history.

We use thick cardboard boxes specially designed for LPs and bubble wrap all around to ensure records are well protected during shipping.  We are not responsible for any damages that occur during shipping.

State tax will be charged to California residents. These costs will be included in your final invoice for payment.

Payment must be completed within 7 days of purchase or auction win. Items will ship within 3-4 business days of receiving cleared payment.

Combined shipping is available.
