Alexander's Ragtime Band was one of the most successful of all Irving Berlin's compositions. This was the original recorded version. Arthur Collins and Byron Harlan had been doing vaudeville and vocal ragtime for more than a decade by this point and were amongst the most accomplished vaudevillians of the day. Collins in particular knew how to give a little ragtime syncopation to a melody. This song had a huge impact on popular music in 1911. Ragtime music had already peaked in popularity, but this song almost single-handedly gave it a new lease of life in the pop world. Unlike a Scott Joplin or James Scott rag, this has only minimal syncopation, making it in some ways 'ragtime pop'. But a whole flood of 'ragtime pop' followed it in the years 1911 to 1913. This is now the second oldest single to have been accepted into the Grammy Hall of Fame (the oldest is Bert Williams' Nobody from 1906.)
