TESLA - Mechanical Resonance LIVE (DOUBLE VINYL LP, 2016)
Review from another site: Mechanical Resonance remains an absolutely fantastic collection of songs and these songs, played live, still sound great 30 years later. The opening 2 tracks really smoke – vintage Tesla performed to the max. There is a lack of bass drum kick in the mix and a bit of over emphasis on the vocals, but overall it’s a solid recording of the live punch Tesla can deliver. I last heard them live on the Forever More and they sounded great at that time. But the recording quality drops off a bit by track 3. The vocals are really loud at the beginning of “Gettin’ Better” but then when the instruments kick in the volume is cut back and fades in and out throughout the song. These effects carry over into “Comin’ Atcha Live” which is a bit distracting at times, but are generally less noticeable going forward. I love the piano/keys with “Changes,” a song that truly defines everything great about this band. Yes, Jeff Keith has lost a bit of his precision to age but who cares – his voice is so distinctively rock. The song order has been changed up here to better suit a live venue (Salt Lake City), but I think it makes for a more natural outplay for these songs. “Rock Me To The Top” makes for a great lead off song and like, what band wouldn’t want to finish with “Modern Cowboy,” a song that I imagine the band never thought would become most synonymous with the Tesla brand.  Recording issues aside, the performance is excellent. I really love how well they handle a songs like “Before My Eyes” and “We’re No Good Together” – songs that don’t exactly translate into a high energy live setting. The bonus track, written by Phil Collen, is pretty hot too. The liner notes include comments by Phil Collen and Joe Elliot of Def Leppard, a band which no doubt shares much respect for Tesla. These guys have been so consistently great over the years, never giving in to the collapse and compromise of the late 80’s melodic rock/metal scene, and this recording is a testament to their legacy.
