The creative process for Billie Eilish’s WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? was informed and inspired by her synesthesia. According to the National Library of Medicine, synesthesia, which is present in only about 2-4% of the population, is a condition in which, “a sensory stimulus presented to one modality elicits concurrent sensations in additional modalities.” In other words, it binds two of one’s senses together, like feeling sounds, hearing colors, or tasting shapes. For Billie and her brother FINNEAS, who co-wrote and produced the album, it meant a lot of different things. Every song on the album has a color, shape, feeling, smell, and number attached to it. “bury a friend” smells like a basement and feels very creepy, “xanny” is smoky and cold, and “i love you” is the number 7 and square.
WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? was released on March 29, 2019, and celebrates its 5-year anniversary this year. It sold 313,000 copies its first week in the U.S. and has since sold over 16 million copies globally. It debuted in the #1 spot on the Billboard 200 chart. It was the most-streamed album of 2019 on Spotify and Apple Music and the #2 highest-selling album of 2019 in the U.S. At the GRAMMYs in 2020, Billie Eilish took home the awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year for “bad guy”, Album of the Year, and Best New Artist. She also won the award for Best Pop Vocal Album bringing her total GRAMMYs for the album to five. WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? was ranked the #1 album of 2019 by The New York Times, Consequence of Sound, NME, and Us Weekly, while “bad guy” was ranked the #1 song of 2019 by Billboard, Rolling Stone, Stereogum, and Uproxx.
