Up for an auction is the incredibly rare Columbia Records promotional issue of Pink Floyd’s 9th studio album “Wish You Were Here” released in September, 1975. The earliest commercial 1st pressing copies of the album were sealed in the blue shrink wrap with a large round album title hype sticker on the front cover.  Unlike the commercial release, the blue shrink wrap wasn’t used for the promotional copies. The copy currently listed for an auction is the unique exception. The information available on the Pink Floyd Archives site indicates that only a handful of promotional issue covers were sealed in the blue shrink wrap. This cover variation is impossible to find. There’re three promotional issues of this album:

1)   Special DJ issue with the blank cover

2)    Promotional issue with the blue cover and the mechanical handshake printed directly onto the cover.

3)   Picture cover issue containing the promo stamp and timing strip.

Among these three promo variations, only this currently listed promotional issue contains two timing strips. The first timing strip is affixed to the back side of the blue shrink wrap and the second timing strip is affixed directly to the front cover underneath the shrink wrap. Despite the fact that the gold embossed “Demonstration Not For Sale” stamp isn’t visible due to the shrink wrap, we can state with confidence that it’s present on the cover in the upper left-hand corner. The blue shrink wrap hasn’t ever been removed from the cover and was only opened at the mouth by the DJ who owned this copy along with the other promotional copies currently listed at our auction in his collection. Affixed to the shrink wrap is a large round sticker featuring a mechanical handshake, the four elements and “Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here” banner. This rare promotional copy comes with the original heavy cardboard inner sleeve with a picture of a red veil blowing in the wind on one side, and credits and lyrics on the other side, as well as the original postcard with a jagged edge. Original 1st print black and blue Columbia picture labels with a mechanical handshake and the bottom edge text starting at 7 o’clock. 1st pressing pre-release promotional issue vinyl with the full matrix numbers being as follows: Side 1 - AL 33453-1C HTM 1S AB; Side 2 - BL 33453-1C 1S A I I.

The insanely rare promotional cover in the blue shrink wrap is graded as Near Mint Minus. The blue shrink wrap has some light age shelf wear. The previous owner made a four inch cut in the shrink wrap along the bottom edge to verify the presence of the promotional timing strip affixed to the cover underneath it. The glossy vinyl is in stunning Near Mint Minus condition with the clean labels being practically Mint Minus. The original cardboard inner sleeve as well as the postcard are in Near Mint Minus condition.
