Original 1st US release of The Jimi Hendrix Experience debut album “Are You Experienced?” with an incredibly rare “The Jimi Hendrix Experience Coming On Reprise” advert teaser sticker. Every time we list a factory sealed album for an auction, we put our maximum effort into determining whether the copy is the 1st pressing. The purchase date, August 3, 1967, of this album that the owner documented in his purchase catalog we had considered to be an error. If it wasn’t due to the memorabilia that were affixed to the album by the collector, it’s most likely we wouldn’t dedicate so much time to his purchase date record. What we’ve been able to find out not only serves the proof that this copy is the very early 1st pressing but also questions the album's official release date. We’ve found the first mentioning of this album in the “Album Reviews: New Action Albums” section (Page 40) of Billboard magazine’s August 5, 1967 issue which is significantly earlier than the album’s official US release date of August 23. The section indicates not only the album title with the Reprise Mono and Stereo catalog numbers but also provides the information about the great sales of the album reading: “These new albums, not yet on Billboard's Top LP's Chart, have been reported getting strong sales action by dealers in major markets.” (Please see the screenshot included after the listing’s photos). This information means that by August 5th, the album had already being sold for quite some time and the purchase date indicated by the owner is correct. We didn’t stop there and continued our research. We’ve found out that the clipping with the review of the album “A Billboard Pick Pop Spotlight” affixed to the copy’s back cover was published in the August 26, 1967 issue of the Billboard magazine. Also affixed to the back cover is a 2” x 10.25” “The Jimi Hendrix Experience Coming on Reprise” psychedelic teaser sticker which along with the other Reprise Records promotional materials was supplied to the store where the owner of the album worked at the time. This sticker was stored in the owner’s collection for some time before he decided to affix it to the album and to be honest the back cover looks fantastic with it. The release of “Are You Experienced?” in the UK took place on May 12, 1967 and already on May 21 the band was signed to Reprise. It's most likely this US teaser was printed at the same time to create a stir before the release of the album in the US. The album remains in a Mint factory sealed condition with the fully intact shrink wrap containing two breathe holes on the front cover. One more proof of this copy being the very early pressing is the “4” printed in the lower right-hand corner of the back cover. This number identifies that the cover was printed by Imperial Packing Co., Inc. and was intended for the Capitol Records, Jacksonville, IN pressing plant. We don’t have any doubts that this copy is a very early pressing as all of the copies with the “4” identifier on the cover that we’ve sold came with the 1st pressing vinyl having the tri-color steamboat label. If you’re a fan of Jimi Hendrix, you’ll most likely be also interested in the other currently listed Jimi Hendrix albums and memorabilia.
