Vintage 31 LP Lot #292: Classical Music Box Sets - VG+ or Better Condition Vinyl - UNTESTED
Comments:
This lot contains seven box set classical / opera music albums. Before spewing out disclaimers about unknowns, let me just say this. The records in this lot all look playable to me, otherwise the records wouldn't be in the lot at all.
There are 7 box set albums in this lot containing a total of 31 individual LPs. A few comments about each album follow: Handel Organ Solos: Release year unknown. Contains 5 LPs in EX to NM condition. There is a single sheet liner notes insert. The box is holding up pretty well. Carmen (1963) and Rigoletto (1962): These are both 3 LP sets with Near Mint vinyl. Each set has a booklet. These two albums are missing their original boxes. I placed them both, together in an old Montgomery Ward big band compilation box. It's a good fit. That box has some taped repairs and writing on the back, but is in otherwise decent shape. Music Of The World's Great Composers (1959): This is a 12 LP set issued by Reader's Digest on RCA Records. The vinyl is minimally in VG+ condition, but the majority of the records are in EX to Near Mint condition. I didn't notice any deep scratches on any of the records, but there are some lighter scuffs here and there. The records need light cleaning to be their best. There is a booklet and a couple of inserts. The box itself is pretty beat up, but still holds the records. The box has been taped, has lots of wear and the top lid has separated from the bottom at the hinge. Capriccio (1972): Deutsche Grammophon German pressing. Club issue. Three Near Mint Records in a decent looking box that has held up well. There is a booklet and inserts too. Columbia Basic Library of Great Classical Music (1956): 3 LP set with the vinyl in VG+ to EX condition. There is a booklet included. The box is pretty beat up around the edges with splits at corners. There is a about half of one of the sides missing on the box lid. But, the box holds the records ok and the lettering on the spin is still readable. The Red Poppy Ballet Suite (1956): 2 LP set with Near Mint vinyl. The box has had some corners taped. The right side panel of the lid has come off and is gone. The text on the spine side looks good though.
This collection of LPs is sold As-Is. I did a visual inspection of each LP. THE RECORDS HAVE NOT BEEN CLEANED AND THE RECORDS HAVE NOT BEEN PLAY-TESTED. Even though I believe these records are probably playable, you never know for sure until you clean them up and give them a spin. It is certainly possible that some of them might not play well. Some little scratch that looked innocent enough might end up causing a skip or I may have missed seeing a warp or something else that causes trouble.
At the very least, some amount of crackle, ticks, clicks and other record noise shouldn't be a surprise.
Visual Record Condition: The records look great for the most part. I visually graded the vinyl in these albums VG+ condition or better after taking a quick look at each record under a bright light. That breaks down to 18 Near Mint discs, 7 EX discs and 6 VG+ discs. These are provisional grades of course since a final grade can't be assigned without a play test. The records are still glossy with some light surface scuffs, occasional light scratches and some dust. You should expect to have to clean these records to get the best sound and best playback. You'll see dust and maybe fingerprints and other spots before cleaning.
Record Labels Condition: Varies, but most are fine.
Jacket Type and Condition: Some of the boxes are pretty worn. Some look pretty good. Some of the boxes have splits at corners. Some have tops that became separated from the bottoms. Some have taped repairs and repairs on top of that. Some have some writing. General surface wear varies from box to box. As previously mentioned, two of the LP sets no longer have their original boxes. I consolidated those two into a different random box that I had on hand. I noticed a little writing on a couple of the accompanying booklets. Please see the photos for details.
Inner Sleeve Type and Condition: The inner sleeves have varying amounts of wear, discoloration/stains.
Play Test Notes and Tips For Best Play Results: I did not play test these LPs. Some will sound better than others. Expect varying levels of record surface noise and you'll probably not be disappointed.
Getting better results by cleaning the LPs before playing: Before I play most old records that look a bit dirty, I usually clean them. If lightly soiled, a record cleaning cloth with some record cleaning solution might do the trick. But for dirtier records, washing works pretty well. It's not hard. Washing has the potential to affect labels, but doesn’t normally cause any harm. This is how I do it: Lay out a bath towel next to the kitchen sink and place a record on it. Add a little dish soap to warm water in the sink. Dip a soft cloth, suitable for record cleaning, in the soaped water and wring out much of the water. I use a record cleaning sponge that is designed to be safe for records. Gently rub the dampened cloth over one side of the record following the grooves in a circular motion as much as is needed to pick up dust and some fingerprints. Repeat for the other side. Rinse both sides with cool or warm (not hot) running water and place the record on a drier part of the bath towel. Use a hand towel to press the record gently from the top side to get most of the moisture off the labels and grooves. Flip the record and repeat the drying. Let the record stand for a while in a drying rack if you have one, or securely leaning against something while allowing air flow. Sometimes extra attention is needed to remove stubborn specks ... If You Run Into A
Problem Playing A Record: Something that I have learned is that if a record
skips, sticks/repeats or has a few loud pops, the problem can often be fixed. Sure – if the
cause is a bad scratch or gouge or a warp - there might not be much hope. But often the
cause of the problem is a speck. Very small specks of sleeve dust or other tiny
debris can adhere to an LP surface from the pressure of sitting jam-packed on
the shelf for years. These little specks can cause skips, sticks/repeats and loud pops. The
good news is that a targeted drop of liquid and a soft record cleaning cloth will often
remove such specks and restore play to normal or at least make things much
better. So don’t give up on a seemingly faulty record without executing a
careful search and destroy mission to eliminate specks.
Shipping Notes: The records will be shipped inside the album covers and packed securely. The shipping costs reflect the weight of the records plus packaging. A big stack of records like this is pretty heavy. Several different shipping service options are available for you to choose from at check-out. I generally pack and ship items sold right away and hand them over to the post office at the earliest opportunity (sometimes same day, sometimes next day).
Please see the photos to check out the condition for yourself to the extent possible. Zoom right in and have a good look. Ask questions if you are puzzled by anything.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------- LOCAL PICKUP RULES: If Free Local Pickup is offered for this item and you choose that option instead of an option to have the item shipped to you, there are a few rules to be aware of. We both have to allocate time to make a pickup work smoothly, so please understand the local pickup rules. Don't choose free local pickup if you are expecting the item to be shipped to you (obviously). That won't work. Don't choose free local pickup if you live far far away, but think you might be in the area someday. That won't work. Pickup arrangements will always be made for a specific date and time, very close to the purchase date. Please don't ask me to hold something for extended periods of time. Pickup arrangements will be made after payment is received for the item. I will specify a location to meet. Payment must be made through eBay as soon as the item is purchased, just like for items shipped though USPS or UPS. No payments will be accepted in person. Failure to pay for the item in a timely manner may result in order cancellation. eBay provides a method to confirm the item has been picked up. At the time of this writing, that method is a QR code plus a six-digit code that can be found by looking at order details or in an email from eBay. YOU MUST BRING THE PICKUP CONFIRMATION CODE WITH YOU FOR EVERY ITEM TO BE PICKED UP. I can't hand over the item(s) without first scanning the pickup confirmation code(s). The codes can be printed or can be presented on your phone (eBay app or email). Items purchased for local pickup must be picked up in a timely manner, preferably the day of purchase or the next day. If you need more time than that to pickup your purchase, we must make arrangements before the item is purchased. Orders not picked up in a timely manner, as described, are subject to cancellation and the item will be relisted for sale. Failure to show up for the arranged pickup meeting will result in order cancellation. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
