Up for auction is the 1st US Los Angeles plant pressing copy of the “The Beatles” album, which is also known as the “White Album” released by Capitol Records on November 22, 1968. It’s quite rare to come across this West Coast, Los Angeles pressing with the misprint labels containing all 7 misspelling errors, but in fact, it’s not this circumstance that makes this copy unique. The front cover which still remains in the original factory shrink wrap contains a hype sticker which is considered one of the rarest stickers that could be found on the cover of this album. This is the only sticker where the title of four tracks haven’t been corrected (Bungalow Bill, Why Don’t We Do It In The Row, Revolution #1 and Revolution #9 (In its turn, the title of the “Rocky Raccoon” track has been corrected). Besides this, if you look at the sticker, you’ll immediately realize that the songs aren’t listed in the same order in which they’re indicated on the record. The rarest “The Beatles” misprint song title 3½" x 3½" black hype sticker also contains the information that the album “includes lyrics to all the tunes plus four Beatle pictures”. 1st batch covers containing the numbers beginning with 0000101 to about 0215000 with the lead zeros and no prefixing were assigned by Capitol Records to its Los Angeles, California pressing plant. 1st print laminated glossy gatefold cover containing the embossed "The Beatles" banner and "0134021" number in the lower right-hand corner still remains in the original factory shrink wrap. 1st misprint Apple Records labels with the Capitol Records logo and all of the 7 spelling errors on sides 1,2, 4 which were corrected on later copies of the album. The full set of promotional extra materials coming with this copy includes:
-A large double-sided 23" x 34" color poster featuring a rights statement on the lyrics side with the second line of the statement reading "© Apple Records"
- Four 8" x 10" portrait photos, one of each Beatle, containing the "Printed in USA" logo in the lower left-hand corner
- A 8" x 10" yellow protector sheet. These blank sheets of paper of different colors were used to separate the sets of photos at the factory.
Thick glossy vinyl pressed at the Capitol Records plant as identified by the “*” (asterisk) identifier in the runout groove of all of the sides contains the 1st pressing matrix numbers, which are as follows:
Side 1: SWBO-1-101-B35 2 * 2
Side 2: SWBO-2-101-A34 2 * 2
Side 3: SWBO-3-101-B37 2 *
Side 4: SWBO-4-101-B35: 2C * 2
The album comes with two original Capitol Records plain white paper inner sleeves.
★
The stunning cover remaining in the fully intact original factory shrink wrap is in Near Mint Minus condition. The top right corner only has a couple of very light creases but is perfectly flat. Aside from that, it's a truly marvelous example. I grade the vinyl as:
Side 1 / 2 / 3: Strong Very Good~Very Good Plus (Visually) / Excellent Minus (Audio)
Side 4: Strong Very Good (Visually) / Excellent Minus (Audio)
The vinyl has a beautiful factory lacquer but has some light non-feelable surface hairlines and marks as well as scuffs from the original Capitol inner sleeves that are in Near Mint condition and don't have any splits or tears. The labels are in beautiful Near Mint (Practically Mint Minus) condition, very clean and don't have any scuffs, wear or spindle marks. The vinyl sounds great with just some very light occasional static that can be heard only at a loud volume during the quiet passages and which most likely would go away if the record was professionally cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. The original large poster is in great vintage Excellent condition with the four portrait photos and the separator sheet being in Near Mint condition.
