BY THE TIME THE DRIFTERS recorded “Drip Drop”, April 28th 1958, they had already undergone too many personnel changes to list here. Suffice it to say that the line-up was: lead vocal Bobby Hendricks; tenor Gerhart Thrasher (the only original member); baritone Jimmy Milner and bass Tommy Evans. The session producers were Leiber & Stoller who also penned the song. The ‘A’ side was “Moonlight Bay” which, despite some 30 plus takes, was regarded as a disaster and became the first Drifters release not to have at least one side rated “excellent”. Hendricks, who had idolized the Drifters quit in disgust and went on to score an R&B No.5 smash with “Itchy Twitchy Feeling”, written by former Drifter Jimmy Oliver. Fortunately, the passing of 50 years has seen “Drip Drop” rise for the bargain bin to one of the most in demand R&B dance hits.

THE “5” ROYALES were originally formed in 1951 in Winston, Salem as The Royals Sons Quintet featuring Lowman and Clarence Pauling (of Motown fame), Otto Jefferies, Johnny Tanner and William Samuels. After a prolific run of releases for Apollo and King the group, now consisting of Pauling, Tanner, Eugene Tanner, Obadiah Carter and Jimmy Moore, signed to Rubin Cherry’s Home Of The Blues in 1960 recording a cover of James Brown’s “Please Please Please”. Our pick, “Catch That Teardrop”, was recorded in ’62 on Home Of The Blues 243 and was picked up for national distribution via ABC-Paramount. It has become a playlist faourite amongst Northern Soul and R&B DJs.
