Peter Narvaez

Rock'n'Roll Ruby

Terraplane Records SW1001 1984 12" 33rpm (Canada)

A blues musician (vocals, guitar, harmonica, mandolin) and folklorist who made St. John's, Newfoundland his home for over thirty-five years, Peter (Pedro) Narváez (pronounced nar-VY-ez)  played with many of the greats of acoustic blues including Sleepy John Estes, Yank Rachell, Big Joe Williams, Skip James, John Jackson, Johnny Shines, Bukka White, Fred McDowell, the Jim Kweskin Jug Band, Dave Van Ronk, Pinetop Perkins and Denis Parker. In 1999 he produced a double CD of Skip James's historic live recordings (the Bloomington [Indiana] concert, 1968) for Document Records.

A singer-songwriter as well, Peter had his songs published and produced by Alan Freed (as "Pete & Jimmy & the Rhythm Knights," see photo below), Buffy Sainte-Marie, Steve Annan, Glen Tilley and Ron Hynes. He has recorded original compositions for the Castle, Takoma (Homegas [as "Peter Aceves"], produced by legendary blues guitarist, the late John Fahey; see photo below), Terraplane, Rap City, and Small Wonder labels as well as for Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) radio and TV.

In Newfoundland, his songs have been performed by Ron Hynes, Cathy Jones, Jamie Snider, The Wonderful Grand Band, Denis Parker, Roger Howse, Scott Goudie, Dog Meat Barbecue, Anita Best, and Vicky Hynes among others.  Often appearing as an acoustic soloist, he also played and recorded with many duos including Neil Rosenberg, Steve Hussey, Darrell Cooper, Glen Collins, Dave Panting, Rik Barron, John Clarke, Brad Power and Duane Andrews (see snap below). He has also been a member of many bands including the Rhythm Knights, the Hootchie Kootchie Jug Busters, Homegas, Marty and the Marginals, Divin' Duck, Terry and the Pirates, Hired Help, the Wonderful Grand Band, Bopular Demand, the Battery Big Band, the Normal Fish and Tackle Choir, the Scott Goudie Band, the Denis Parker Band, the Roger Howse Band, Cookstown  Jukes, Duncan and Brady, Whoopaxe, PowerHouse Blues, RowdyBlues (with John Clarke, Scott Goudie, and Denis Parker), The Darrell Cooper Band and since 2009 Superpickers (with Glen Collins and Sandy Morris; see snap below).

A frequent contributor to CBC radio's Goosebumps and The Performance Hour, he co-hosted, scripted, and performed with Denis Parker on CBC's history of blues series Red, Hot and Blue. His vinyl LP entitled Rock 'n’ Roll Ruby, received critical plaudits from local, regional, and national reviewers (The Herald, Atlantic Insight, Variety Tonight, Roots and Rhythm). His latest CD, Some Good Blues was the basis for Peter’s receiving nominations as "Blues Artist of the Year" from the Music Industry Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (2002) and the East Coast Music Awards (2003).

The folklorist, ethnomusicologist and musician died on Nov. 11, 2011 of lung cancer, which had been diagnosed in 2008. He was 69.

A Note About Shipping To The U.S.
We are located in Canada, but have registered ourselves on eBay.com instead of eBay.ca because it gives us significantly better global exposure.  The problem with this is that eBay wants us to charge shipping appropriate to US, where media mail and other options make for fairly reasonable delivery costs. We tried it for a while but ended up losing money on shipping or having to cancel the orders because we couldn't afford to ship for those rates. To manage this we have set the US shipping to run a calculator based on an American location (we chose Plattsburgh as fairly close) and charging according to UPS pricing.  This avoids the cancellation issue, but appears to the buyer to be a prohibitive shipping cost and misrepresents the shipping as being only expedited. If you give us your postal code we will see if we can offer a more reasonable option, but generally we can get a single LP by air to most places in the continental US for $11, a few bucks less for ground.
