A fascinating record, dark and intense, on the verge of the Exotica genre. Bas Sheva's wordless (but not inarticulate) vocals just add the perfect hint of weirdness to the whole. Bas Sheva moans, shrieks, barks, laughs, (occasionally also sings) and Les Baxter's orchestra adds all the drama you need -- "a fabulous musical experience" indeed! The king of easy listening definitely outdid himself on this record, which is anything but coffee table music; more like an overindulgent, borderline-kitschy cross between a Bernard Herrmann soundtrack and some 50s musical. The mid-1950s must have been a strange time. Unique and essential, not just Incredibly, Surreally, Otherworldly Strange.

OK, folks, here's what we know about this incredible, APPARENTLY UNRELEASED IN THIS FORM  Les Baxter album.

The album was in, fact, released, in more or less  the same form as this acetate (there may be some minor variances between the acetate and the released version; we haven't played  the original 10" LP in decades, and some details elude us) . However, the original 1954 release was ONLY issued in the form of the Capitol 10" record, neatly housed in an elaborately constructed box which contained a booklet explaining the concept behind the recording. Alas, the album flopped big time, sold miserably (despite it's now-recognized near-revolutionary acclaim). Capitol NEVER released another version of  this recording until well into the digital age, and certainly not in the 12-inch Long Play format.

However, as this acetate amply demonstrates, Capitol was indeed preparing for the release of the album on a 12" LP, but was probably pre-empted by the poor sales and abandoned the 12" project  before it reached it's fruition.  To the best of our knowledge, this is the first, the last and the only 12" format of this recording ever found anywhere,  and certainly the only one ever offered for sale online.

PLEASE NOTE: THIS ACETATE APPARENTLY NEVER HAD A CUSTOM COVER;  THE ALBUM WILL BE SHIPPED IN A PLAIN, GENERIC [WHITE] CARDBOARD COVER. ACETATES AND REFERENCE PRESSINGS ARE RARELY – IF EVER – FOUND IN CUSTOM (STOCK) COVERS.

While this acetate is in a BEAUTIFUL state of preservation, we do expect bidders to understand that the aluminum-based, shellac-coated acetates can never be graded by using the exact, same stringent standards used by collectors for modern long-play, hi-fi LPs or singles. The buyer – if not familiar with acetate (reference) recordings - should be cautioned that these discs were intended for brief, limited use only; they were meant to be played only a few times, then discarded or destroyed. In view of this, the surface layer of the disc is manufactured in such a manner that it will wear off pretty quickly, even under normal conditions -- and specially if not handled with due care. Each subsequent playing increases wear and tear of the disc’s surface layer and diminishes the disc’s playability. This disc appears to have been unplayed recently and the grooves are still well-formed and fully visible.

This acetate is in about VERY GOOD++ (VG++) condition, with some minor, superficial scuffs. Absolutely NO part of the shellac (surface layer) of the disc is  missing, and the surface layer is NOT dented, chipped, broken or otherwise compromised.

ON A SCALE FROM 1-10 (where 10 is the best), WE GRADE RECORD AS 8
